Chattanooga Overview

I know how frustrating it was to not make it out of pool after beating the number 2 seed from pool C  in our cross-pool match.  We definitely had a tough pool this weekend!  Regardless, we finished the weekend 4-4  (a much better showing than the 1st time we played in Chattanooga this season finishing 1-7)!  Great work keeping our win/loss record above 500.  We are currently 24-21.

I was so pleased entering the stats this morning!  Everyone is doing a great job improving their skills and attaining their individual goals.  After our first tournament, only 1 player had reached their hitting goal keeping their hitting percentage above +.200.   This tournament, 6 players were all over  +.200  AND 9 out of our 10 were in the positive!  That’s SOOOO good!  That means we are eliminating our errors and reducing the number of points we give away in a game!

Good job to the following players who hit above +.200 this weekend:   Carrie, Cora, Emma, Hannah, Jessica and Sam.

Hannah, you did a great job setting this weekend.  You averaged 5.5 assists per game.  I want you to keep pushing yourself to “better the ball” and make the best sets you can make.  Always be aware of our competition.  Take advantage of tall hitter and short blocker match ups.  I want to you to really push to get above the 6 assists per game mark.  I know you can do it!

Taina and Jessica you are still doing a great job blocking!  Right now you are both averaging about ½ block per game.  Make sure we are closing our blocks with the OH/RH and I know we can get you both averaging at least 1 block per game.   If you are an OH/RH make sure we are setting the block for our middles.  Remember to give line and take away angle.  NO FLOATING!!!  Our defense sets up around your block.  Don’t move it at the last minute!

Congratulations to Cora, Emma, Sam and Taina for being positive in serving points this weekend.  Great job ladies!  Way to serve aggressively!  This is the 3rd tournament  in a row that the team has been positive in serving points!  Keep getting those aces (and reducing those errors!).

Carrie, Cora, Jessica and Taina…  great job with serve receive this weekend!  You were all above 80%.  A special call out to Carrie who passed 100% for the tournament.

As far as the overall season totals go:

Congratulations to Carrie and Taina for keeping  their hitting % above .200.
Great job to Cora, Emma, Jessica and Taina on maintaining at least 1 dig per game.
Cora, Emma and Taina you are all in the positive on serving points.
Cora, Emma, Jessica and Taina you are all serve receive passing above 80%.

Great job this weekend Cobras!  We have a couple weeks off from tournaments to refine our skills and then I expect us to win it all again in Nashville.  Let’s bring home another championship for Cobb Atlanta!

Thanks,

Coach Courtney

16 RED COBRA VICTORY IN GULF SHORES!!!

First off, I’d like to say how proud I am of how each and every one of you played this weekend!  I could not have been more pleased with our performance ESPECIALLY in play-offs!   I can honestly say that everyone really stepped up and contributed to our win!  As I entered statistics this morning I was so happy to see every one go up in stat numbers!

I want to identify people individually; but first, let me just say how pleased I am on the improvement of our serve receive and defense!  You can tell from the stats (although I think it is apparent) that the improved passing DEFINITELY enabled our setters to provide better sets so that we could run a more effective offense.

Congratulations to the following people for increasing their hitting % this weekend:
Carrie, Cora, Hannah, Jessica, Katherine, Lindy, Sam and Taina

A special “good job” to Carrie and Taina for being above .200.  You’re above your goal!

Congratulations to the following people for increasing their digs per game this weekend:
Carrie, Emma, Hannah, Jessica, Katherine, Sam, Taina and Taylor

A special shout out to Cora, Emma, Jessica and Taina for making 1+ digs per game!

Congratulations to the following people for increasing their blocks per game this weekend:
Carrie, Cora, Emma, Katherine, Sam and Taina

Carrie, Jessica and Taina- you are doing great!

Congratulations to the following people for increasing their serving points this weekend:
Carrie, Cora, Emma and Sam

Carrie, Cora, Emma, and Taina you are all in the positive.  Great work ladies!

Almost everyone improved their serve receive percentage.  Several of you passed 100% in multiple games!

Cora, Emma, Jessica, Sam and Taina:  You are all above 80% now.   Let’s keep passing well and push to get above the 90% mark.

I’ll see you at practice on Wed. from 7:30-9:30 at McClesky.  Remember to wear your WINNERS shirts to practice and to bring me your tournament shirt if you bought one.  Jessica is going to have “Champions” printed on them for us!

Congratulations again for pulling out the tournament victory!  We also improved our overall win/loss record (above 500) with 20 wins and 17 losses.   Great job ladies!

Go Cobras!!!

Thoughts For The Weekend

I hope you all are as excited as I am about our first tournament this weekend!  I'm looking forward to seeing you all play in a real-time game situation.  Remember, volleyball games are lost not won.  Volleyball is one of the rare sports that rewards points on the basis of errors.   We don't have to be perfect, we just need to make fewer mistakes then our opposing teams. Going into this weekend, let's focus on making as few mistakes as possible.  You don't have to get a hundred aces or kills... we just need to minimize our errors!  That means always keeping the ball in play.

We need to be scrappy and hustle for the ball every point.  Play each point as if it were game point.  If you serve out of bounds when the score is 5-5... it could be the reason we lose a game 23-25.  We don't have to be an amazing team of all-stars, but I will accept nothing less than for us to be a "consistent" team that plays "smart" volleyball.  Take pride when you step onto our court by not allowing the ball to drop on it.

See you tomorrow at practice!  Let's work hard since it's our last practice before Saturday.  Remember, I can make small adjustments during a tournament, but you feed your knowledge and skills during practice. Come hungry!

Homework Due Wednesday 1/13

1.) List 5 things you personally can do on Saturday to minimize team errors throughout the tournament.

2.) List 5 things the team as a whole can do on Saturday to minimize team errors throughout the tournament.

3.) List 5 things Wes and I can do on Saturday to minimize team errors throughout the tournament.
