Sunday 4/4/10

The morning started off great with a win against a tough opponent.  Alabama proved to be even tougher.  We fought hard in the first game, but couldn't pull out the win.  In the 2nd game, well, we will just leave it at that.

  • Choo Choo 15 White 25-20, 25-19
  • Alabama Jrs. 15-1 23-25, 14-25

Finished 71st out of over 124 teams!  We were ranked the highest out of all CAJ 15 teams!

Highlights:

  1. As a team, we learned how to score points off aces and well placed attacks (front row and backrow).  Our hitters were looking for open spots on the court to hit to rather than just going up and swinging.
  2. Our middles and right side attacker owned the net, putting up a huge block which scored many points for the team.
  3. Our libero and defensive specialist continually dug balls and passed on target so we could run our offense.  They learned to read the hitter and anticipate where the ball was going.
  4. We are improving running the 1 set in the middle.
  5. WE PLAYED LIKE A TEAM.  YOU ALL COMMUNICATED WELL ON THE COURT, SUPPORTED AND ENCOURAGED EACH OTHER, CELEBRATED SUCCESSES WITH ENTHUSIASM, AND HAD A LOT OF FUN!

Next Steps:

  • When we come up against a tough opponent, we need to stay in control.  Don't let the other team take you out of your game.  Stay positive, learn from mistakes, and encourage and support each other more than normal.  Volleyball is a mental game.  Keep your mind right and you will find yourself having more successes, having more fun, and playing better than you ever had!

Coach Crystal and I are so proud of how well all of you played this weekend.  Everything we have been working on all season finally came together.  This was everyone's best tournament and probably the best everyone has ever played.  If you continue to play like this, your high school coaches are going to be amazed at how much you have improved!

Homework

My Favorite Drill

All players have a favorite drill that they would love to do at every practice. Each player will have a chance to run their favorite drill at practice.  Please refer to the following schedule for your date.  Please email Coach Jenn with your drill that includes the name of the drill, the drill's focus (what skill or aspect of the game it is working on), specific directions on how to run the drill, and the role of the coaches in the drill.  Remember, the drill has to work for 9 players and no one should be waiting in line for an extended period of time.  Your drills are due to Coach Jenn the day before your scheduled practice.

Wednesday 3/10 ~ 7:30 - 9:30 Pm McCleskey:

  1. Ashley
  2. Nicola
  3. Stacey
  4. Naomi

Monday 3/15 ~ 8 - 10 PM Kell:

I know this is a late practice for everyone.  I will end practice about 9:55 PM to take down the nets so we are out of the gym by 10 PM.  To be respectful to all teammates, everyone needs to help with the nets so they can get put away quickly!

  1. Megan
  2. JoJo
  3. Claire
  4. Emily

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Motivation ~ It's a Funny Thing!

Volleyball is a game of technical skill and tactics, but also of momentum, heart, and the ability to adjust to the many different situations you come up against.  No two rallies will ever be the same.

Past coaches I have had said that volleyball is 85% mental and 15% skill.  Back then I wasn't sure if I believed them, but now I completely agree.  Why did I play so good at times and then make so many mistakes at others?  My skill set didn't decrease nor did my understanding of my position, I just didn't execute like I normally did. This was very frustrating to me as a player.  I would get mad, and then determine not to make any more mistakes.  You ARE NOT going to ace me again, you ARE NOT going to block me again, etc. and almost magically the cloud would lift and I was playing my normal game again.  It became a very personal, prideful attitude for me.  You are not going to do this to me.  It was all in my head.

Each girl needs to understand the mental side of the game.  Thought processes need to be taught ~ how should I think on the volleyball court?

Players have fractions of seconds to read the ball in flight and get to the right spot to set themselves to play the ball.  All of this happens so fast that is seems like you are just reacting and no actually thought process happens.  Players have to learn to read the ball and make many adjustments on the court. They are also saying things to themselves ~ positive and negative things about their play.  With all of this swimming inside the head of a 15 and under team, it is amazing that they can function, let alone play this complicated game.

Here are some important questions that need to be answered.

  1. What is expected of me?  If you are a outside hitter, you need to pass consistently and get kills for your team, middle hitter ~ block and get kills, setters feed the hitters, right sides ~ block the outside hitter and get kills, defense ~ nothing hits our floor.
  2. How can I get better at what is expected of me?
  3. How can I support and motivate my teammates?
  4. When I make a mistake, how can I correct it?
  5. If I get in a rut, how do I get myself out of it?
  6. When I am on a roll, how do I stay there?
  7. Why am I playing competitive volleyball?
  8. What level of play do I want to reach?
  9. What is motivates me to play hard all the time?  What does my coach need to know to help me with this?
  10. What do I think about between the whistles on the court?

Players, please answer the above 10 questions truthfully, completely and be very specific.  Notice that these questions are all about you.  You have to know what makes you tick so you can become the best you can be.  You may have never thought about these questions before, so please take your time and think before you write.  They are due on Sunday 2/21.  Practice is at McClesky from 5 - 7 PM.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
